The purpose of the FRC is to set high standards of corporate governance, auditing and reporting, by holding those responsible to account. These relate to other prominent businesses such as the troubled travel firm Thomas Cook, and the well-known outsourcer Carillion. There are currently eight investigations which have been disclosed by the FRC into audits conducted by the Big Four.
These investigations are just another blow to the UK's Big Four accounting firms. However, this relationship also ran into issues following the signing off of the 2018 accounts, when a shareholder claimed the auditors were 'dithering'. The company has a history of issues with auditing firms, with KMPG resigning in 2018 due to issues with the Eddie Stobart management team when looking to obtain evidence to complete the 2017 audits.

Newly appointed Anoop Kang conducted a full financial audit of the company accounts and reported the major errors. The errors came to light when the company hired a new chief financial officer in April 2019. There are two investigations being undertaken by the FRC, the first relating to the November 2017 audit by KPMG, and the second relating to the following audit which was completed by PwC. In an effort to improve the value of shares, the logistics group has described how a full review will be completed with the current auditors relating to the latest interim results. Since the issues came to light, Eddie Stobart has published its interim results, which shows a restatement of profits and revenues dating back more than two years, with the value of the company's assets decreasing by £169 million. The business was saved by DBAY Advisors following a £55 million loan however, the value of shares fell by almost 90% following the discovery, leaving many investors disappointed and wondering where the issues lay. Sebastien Desreumaux was appointed as the new chief executive, shares on AIM were suspended and it was announced that the interim results would be delayed. It was found that profits were overstated by £2 million and the businesses chief executive Alex Laffey resigned that month. The well-known haulage company Eddie Stobart Logistics almost fell into administration in 2019, when major accounting issues were discovered in the 2018 accounts. I believe many of the issues can be attributed to the lack of training and experience of junior staff who are used to carry out much of the audit work by the UK's Big Four accounting firms - KPMG, PwC, Deloitte and EY.
